Eye Movement Desensitisation & Reprocessing (EMDR)
on the Gold Coast

What is EMDR?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is recommended by the World Health Organisation (WHO) for the treatment of Trauma and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). EMDR is an effective evidence-based psychotherapy that helps people heal from the symptoms associated with traumatic memories.

Who is EMDR for?

Whilst EMDR is typically designed to help people recover from trauma and PTSD, evidence suggests that EMDR is also an effective treatment for disorders such as anxiety, depression, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), chronic pain, addictions, and other distressing life experiences.

How does EMDR work?

Your psychologist will take a history and assess the problem that you present with before helping you identify when you began experiencing symptoms, and what memories may be associated. You do not have to describe in detail what happened, a few key components will suffice. Once the target memories have been identified, you will be asked to bring up the memory and your thoughts and feelings associated with it. Do not be concerned if you begin to experience an uncomfortable sensation when recalling these memories, it isn’t unusual for clients to feel tension in their throats or stomachs. Your therapist will then begin bilateral eye movements to help you process the memory to a more positive resolution. At the end of processing, the memory may feel more distant and often harder to recall, and you will be able to talk about it without distress.

Therapy is typically delivered once per week for a total of 6-12 sessions, although some people benefit from fewer sessions. Sessions can be conducted on consecutive days, subject to availability.
